Personalized Valentine’s Songs Offered by the River Valley Harmonizers
WAUSAU, WI — For the past 12 years, the River Valley Harmonizers have been going out of their way to make Valentine’s Day special for local residents.
Rich Pijan, the group’s coordinator for the Singing Valentines, took a call last year from a man who wanted to order a singing valentine for his wife at the couple’s 10th anniversary banquet the weekend of Valentine’s Day.
A quartet had made an impromptu visit to their wedding reception in Mosinee 10 years before and the husband wanted to recreate the magic by having the Barbershoppers serenade his wife again.
A few days later, the man called Pijan and told him that his wife had suffered a stroke and the anniversary dinner had been canceled. He told Pijan to keep the $50.
“We got together and said, you know, it really is a shame she couldn’t get her valentine,” Pijan said.
A few hours later, the quartet arrived at Aspirus Wausau Hospital to sing “I Love You Truly” and two other songs for the woman and her husband.
It’s that kind of story that keeps the group of men going every year, Pijan said. The quartet delivers the special valentines with a rose and a handwritten card with a personalized sentiment.
Four quartets have signed up so far to deliver singing valentines Feb. 12 to 14 in the Wausau, Mosinee and Merrill areas. The singing valentines start at $30 and the money raised helps the group’s operating expenses.
Proceeds from the singing valentines go toward music scholarships at UWMC, buying music and repairing musical equipment.
